Facebook App Lets Shaq Help You Skip Work for March Madness

For sports fans, it’s a truly existential question: The first two days of March Madness are among the sporting year’s best, but how do you get out of work? Calling in sick is transparent, and vacation days are mighty precious to use up for marathon TV-watching sessions.

Now, there’s a new option — having basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal call your boss to say the two of you are busy “hitting the beach” or “getting a style makeover.”

That’s the idea behind Shaq’s Big Excuse, a March Madness-themed Facebook promotion by the Dove Men+Care grooming brand. To employ Shaq, just visit the brand’s Facebook Page, then click on the Shaq’s Big Excuse tab. There, you’ll find a range of options letting you stitch together the ultimate boss-juking, basketball-watching excuse, all in Shaq’s signature rumble.

The app’s first step is selecting what you want Shaq to call your boss. Options include “Hunny Bunny,” “Dude,” “Princess,” “Bro” and “Playa.” Next, pair that with how you want Shaq to introduce himself; “Shaq Diesel” is the obvious best choice among four options. Then pick your excuse. In addition to the to aforementioned ones, Shaq can also say the two of you are “enjoying a Shaq movie marathon,” “in a yodeling competition” or “finding my lost championship ring.” Lastly, enter your phone number and boss’s digits, and have Shaq make the call.

Shaq is clearly no stranger to high-profile promotions. But he’s also no stranger to social media. He was one of the sports world’s earliest Twitter adopters. Like many athletes, though, he owes some of his online success to a certain social media savant.

Is Shaq’s Big Excuse fun or lame? Try it out for yourself and let us know in the comments.
