YouTube Famous Military Singer Battles on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ [VIDEO]

Angie Johnson, the 31-year-old U.S. Air Force staff sergeant whose cover of an Adele song went viral on YouTube in 2011, was eliminated from “The Voice” Monday night after being included among the final 48 contestants.

Johnson’s run on NBC’s popular singing contest show came on the heels of her Internet fame. She racked up more than 2 million views for her rendition “Rolling in the Deep” that was posted in August. In the video, Johnson performs the tune in military clothing while stationed in the Middle East.

Monday’s episode featured contestants in one-on-one battles that each ended with one singer being sent home. Johnson sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart” against spunky 21-year-old Cheesa Laureta. Judges praised Johnson’s powerful vocals and diction, but her coach Cee Lo Green chose Laureta to move forward instead.

Before the battle, Johnson got advice from guest mentor and Grammy award-winning R&B singer Ne-Yo.
“You can play it cool at the beginning. … (Then) I need you to go at her throat,” Ne-Yo said.

“Do you know I’m in the military?” Johnson responded. “The finger’s got to stay off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.”

Previously, Johnson won Mashable‘s first YouTube Cover Song Face-Off with her Adele cover, accumulating nearly 50% of the 3,300 votes. Her version (watch below) beat out nine other covers including acoustic, beatbox, choir, duet, garage rock, guitar, live, mashup and piano versions.
