Forget about those boring brake and tail lights you see on today’s cars – the future, at least according to German car maker Audi – is far more bright and cheerful.
Audi Visions OLED lighting concept brings large OLED surfaces instead of (and in addition to) “standard” lights on Audi R8 and Q7 vehicles. The result is quite stunning: a dazzling array of light effects that correspond to various functions of the vehicle – for example speeding up, turning left or right – or simply look cool.
And while the Audi R8 covered with two large OLED stripes looks amazing (and surprisingly tasteful, considering how many colored OLEDs were used), the real treat comes at the end of the video, where we see an unnamed prototype car with fully animated tail lights, adding a “whoa” factor to your ordinary left and right turns.
Audi calls this last effect the “swarm,” as the entire rear end of the car is turned into a large illuminated surface that reacts to the car’s movement and functions.
We won’t see this technology in full effect on the street for at a least couple more years though, because current OLEDs aren’t bright enough for brake lights, for example.
“This homogeneous visual effect would not be possible with today’s LEDs. These are individual points of light that need additional optical devices – reflectors, optical conductors or scatter optics. OLED surfaces are themselves the source of light, and the thin plates also look attractive. They weigh little, light up extremely fast, develop only a small amount of heat, last for several tens of thousand hours and don’t consume any more energy than conventional light-emitting diodes,” explains Head of Lighting Electronics at Audi Stephan Berlitz.
